Liu Tian, curator; Deputy Director of the Visual Culture Research Center at China Academy of Art(CAA); Ph.D and researcher at CAA’s Institute of Contemporary Art and Social Thoughts (ICAST), School of Inter-Media Art (SIMA); the founder of “Open Matter Institute”.

 

Liu Tian has a long-term commitment to the iteration and renovation of research-creation, his work spans curation, creative practice work, theoretical research, design and writing. He has participated in curating series academic exhibitions since 2006, including: The Way Toward Poetry, Be In a Half of Maze, Inter-World-View, Catch the Muddle, Elements - Selected Photographs of Long Chin-San, Passage of Sinthome, Condition, The Nights of Work-er, Cause and Examples Projected from It, Museum of Inspiration 1.0, Lyrical and Epic, Anyball, Transparent Iron, -da Manifesto: Homage but not Hostage, Memorandum for Gaia, etc. He was also the member of curatorial collegiate of the 11th Shanghai Biennale Why Not Ask Again: Arguments, Counter-arguments and Stories, and Mise-en-Scène of Theory Opera.

 

He was the jury member of several art prizes, such as Huayu Youth Award in 2017, 2018, and 2020, as well as Hyundai Blue Prize ART+TECH in 2020 and 2021. He was nominated by the 14th Award of Art China for Curator of the Year in 2020. He had won multiple prizes such as the Power Station of Art’s 1st Emerging Curators Project in 2014, Red Dot Design Award 2018, etc. As a writer, he was finalist of the 7th International Award for Art Critisicm in 2021, his works have been published by multiple professional art and academic journals, including Art Forum, New Arts, Leap, Art World, etc. His research currently concerned with the generalized mass-oriented curation and design, with the simultaneous exploration and practice of rural grassroots, classical origins and sci-tech frontiers.
