Leonardo Chiachio & Daniel Giannone

Chiachio & Giannone are Leo Chiachio and Daniel Giannone. Both Argentinian they live and work together in Buenos Aires. Originally trained in painting they moved into hand embroidery where they use a dazzling array of colour and stitches as they redefine the traditional family portrait into a riot of colour and technique. Epic in scale, their work incorporates elements of magical realism and a sense of humour. They simultaneously reflect the changes in society while demonstrating an encyclopaedic knowledge of stitch.

Comechiffones #5.Hand embroidery with cotton threads, cross stitch embroidery, apliqué, quilt andhand print with serigraphy on reused fabric.450 x 450 cm.2024
In the series "Comechiffones" we pay homage to our Comechingones ancestors, Chiachio's great-grandmother belonged to this native people. In this family setting all the members of the family, CH&G and their children-dogs, pose for their portrait surrounded by their ideal collection of textiles and vases (references to the intersection between European culture and Argentine peoples, among the vases of native peoples and a tribute to Brancusi). This constellation between European cultures and Argentine native peoples, constitutes us as the men we are today.
