Cho Sohee

Sohee Cho explores various artistic forms based on reflections on art and imagery. Alongside the ontology of art, a central theme that runs through her work is time. The time she perceives and senses exists as a kind of void in the background of life, and she continues to develop works composed of linear forms that metaphorically embody the continuity of time.

At the core of her artistic practice is Letter_Life Project (2007–ongoing), a continuous project in which she records linear texts in the form of daily letters. Another key series, …where…, is an installation featuring vast circular forms created with fine thread through crochet techniques, suspended within space. The continuous flow of thread and the repetitive motion of crochet generate gaps and voids, encapsulating the artist’s subtle perception of time, while simultaneously revealing the weight of accumulated time.

is an ongoing work that spans the Artist's entire life, creating one or two letters every day. , made of translucent silk fabric and thin paper, has been stacked layer by layer for 15 years since the work began in 2007, and 10,000 letters were completed at the end of 2019.
The content of the letter is very simple. Type words, phrases, or sentences repeatedly on thin paper. The meaning of letters is very diverse, ranging from everyday things to contemplative and conceptual content. However, in , the vertical linear form created by the repetition of words is noticeable before conveying the primary meaning of the phrase. The shape is related to the linear form expressed with crochet in the artist's other work, (2003-present). The work in this series progressively visualizes the continuation and accumulation of time through repetition. In , in the process of repeated typing and overlapping letters, the letters lack legibility and become line images, emphasizing their continuity.
In the future, will continue to build up, creating a quiet texture through repetitive rhythms throughout the Artist's life. And at some point, when accumulates to the point where it can no longer bear the weight of time and reaches a certain critical point, the work is planned to be sent out to anonymous people and dispersed. Just as the meaning of all existence becomes complete through its disappearance, the work will also be completed only when it reaches disappearance.
