International Symposium: Events As a Thread- Linkages of Fiber Art
Curators: Feng Boyi, Wang Xiaosong, Xu Jia, Assadour Markarov
Time: November 26th(afternoon)-27th(full day), 2019
Venue: Zhejiang Art Museum, Hangzhou, China
The 3rd Hangzhou Triennial of Fiber Art themed as Boundless Encounters emphasizes exploration starting from creation subjects verified in the end through artist works; while the symposium themed in Filament Field seeks to extend fiber in cultural thinking and artistic approach. “Filament” is the most common form for fibers to be materialized or expressed. But this symposium will focus on the non-linear expansion instead of one-dimension linear extension of fibers and pay attention to the cognitive expansion propelled by fiber’s interactions with the non-linear space. If fiber as in common understanding is perceived as a life form, then we expect to probe, through symposiums, into the spatial form of its existence and growth as well as the values of fiber’s presence in the field. Therefore, while pondering over something, other than emphasizing logical preciseness, we also expect complexity and contradictions in different perspectives.
Given the above intention, the symposium, based upon traditional disciplinary contents related to fiber art creation and material development such as design, fashion, material, culture, industry, society, ethic etc. and aiming at giving continuous stimulus to fiber art creation, will turn the discussions, preparations beforehand and literature afterwards into a succession of art testing grounds immersed in fiber language.
