Interlacing New Directions

From time immemorial, weaving art around the world has been passed down from one generaion to the next. Therefore, the history of fiber art also reflects the history of different people and culture. However, despite all the changes occurring in weaving techniques around the world of all ages, they still remain closely dependent on warp and weft.

“Warp and Weft, Sprawling towards Four Directions” is divided into two sections. In the first section, wool tapestry and K'o-ssu(Chinese Silk Tapestry)from ancient China will be exhibited. The technique “inserting from warp but returning from weft”used in weaving K'o-ssu is renowned as one of the most ancient weaving techniques, symbolizing a peak for ancient Chinese weaving art. During the Southern Song Dynasty, it produced
art works of the highest artistic quality. In the second section, digital weaving art works by six contemporary international artists will be displayed. As a newly emerged weaving technique, digital weaving art represents the advancement of today’s science and technology. These two techniques, at the two ends of time and space, start a dialogue in spite of distance, not only forming a kind of interesting tension, but also revealing the
insatiable pursuit of weaving art which connects the past and the present and sprawls towards four directions.
