Fiber Study Enables You to Understand "Fibers" by Listening | The Warm-up Event of the Second Hangzhou Triennial of Fiber Art

On April 23rd, 2016, World Book Day, Zhejiang Art Museum, which was closed for renovation, launched a special art project - named "Fiber Study" - with Maryn Varbanov Tapestry Research Institute of China Academy of Art. During the next wholeone month, for this warm-up event of the Second Hangzhou Triennial of Fiber Art, the museum will invite many distinguished guests to Xiaofeng Bookstore, who, through book readings, lectures or workshops, etc., to will take the public on engagingto trips to experience the charm of fiber art. This program Ais part of the diverse educational events of Weaving & We: The Second Hangzhou Triennial of Fiber Art 2016, held in August in Zhejiang Art Museum, this program will gradually unveiling this mysterious exhibition from multiple dimensions.

Zhang Yuling, PhD in art history of Panthéon-Sorbonne, art historian and columnist, contributing editor of the French edition of LEAP, and the producer and writer of Mini Documentaries of China's Art Circle, will showcase his interpretation of The Lady and the Unicorn. Jean le Viste, a fifteenth-century nobleman close to the king, hires Nicholas des Innocents, a talented miniaturist, to design six tapestries celebrating his rising status at Court. Huang Yan, young teacher in the Department of Sculpture of China Academy of Art and PhD candidate in sculpture morphology (Fiber Art Creation: Theory and Practice) at China Academy of Art, will give a themed workshop from the Fiber and Space Art Studio of China Academy of Art. In 2003, the Department of Morphology of China Academy of Art combined the academic foundation of Maryn Varbanov Tapestry Research Institute with the discipline of sculpture to found the Fiber Art and Spatial Art Studio, led by Shi Hui, disciple of Maryn Varbanov. Adhering to material experimentation as the foundation, the Fiber Art and Spatial Art Studio hasve expanded the scope of materials and presented unique perspectives staring with fiber and its artistic language as the starting point.

Assadour Markarov, one of the planners of Weaving & We: The Second Hangzhou Triennial of Fiber Art, associate professor of National Academy of Art of Sofia in Bulgaria and director of the Department of Textile Art and Design[N2] , will bring an outstanding lecture titled “Maryn Varbanov and Fiber Art”. As an international artist, Varbanov not only promoted and enriched modern tapestry art, but also enlightened modern art creation amidst inside the China's academy system of China.  in the context of China. In his works, application of various "soft materials" (palm fiber, flax, and elastic cords, etc.) and "hard materials" (metal and rocks, etc.) not only fully embodies his courage to take on reforms as an artist, but also awakens people to the relationship between among art, nature and society.

Fiber Study has invited special guest Song Chunyang, lecturer at the laboratory of the Fiber and Space Art Studio[N3]  of the School of Sculpture of China Academy of Art, to host a wool felt workshop, creating art out of "woolen balls.". The workshop is open to children aged 8 to 14 and aims to teach children the technique of wet felting and how to create art by combining creativity with forms such asof spheres, hemispheres, and circles with their creativity.
