The Eight Immortals Crossing the Sea

China

“Eight Immortals Crossing the Sea” Group was founded in 2022 by a group of students from Research Institute of Society & Strategy, School of Design & Innovation of CAA. Here are the eight members: Chen Yiqiu, Jiang Huailiying, Jia Xiaoxu, Li Yuan, Liu Yichi, Shi Yuchen, Wu Shufan, and Yang Jingyi. Their recent projects include 2021-2022: A Second Life for Wandering Chairs, Weakest Beasts, The Missing Eleven Days, Walking Through 11 Pages of “Dimension” on Tiptoe, among others. With the guidance of the instructor Liu Yihong, the group partnered with the One Ton Project and developed an interactive, open-for-participation project based on recycled fabrics: One Ton Project - Being Theoria, And to Coexist.

“One Ton of Refilling Pool Project” is the special project of the 4th Hangzhou Triennial of Fiber Art in 2022. Guided by the philosophy “Being Theoria, And to Coexist” and through an archaeological and genealogical approach, the project re-interprets different forms of fiber such as “rope”, “knot”, “net”, and “cloth” from different perspectives and facets. The team starts with a “knot” and uses a vivid narrative as a “guide rope” trying to weave out a state of being that bears relevance to the present life—from “knots” to “nets”, and from “nets” to “cloths”, under which all things coexist.

The team spent half a year collecting from individuals and enterprises a total of “one ton” of unsold and used bed sheets as well as the offcuts, all of which were used for or as the team’s artworks. In this project, the team wove the sheets into a huge bed and sewed nearly 500 sheet-related artistic presentations into a set of shared book pillows, demonstrating a way of sensing everyday objects and providing inspirations and guidelines for a series of sheet artworks. Meanwhile, the team added artist Lei Zhen’s work Shapes and Colors into this special project and wove the “huge cloth” together with Ningbo Fashion Creative Center (NFCC) and “One Ton Project”.
