Memory Stone

Wool, stone, multi-media

50 × 50 cm × 21

2019-2022

Memory Stone selects 21 satellite cloud images captured over North China, Song’s hometown, from 2001 to 2022: the images from the early stage show a clear sky and green clouds, gradually the atmosphere turning turbid, and finally the sky pallid and smoggy and the terrain profile blackish and hazy. Meanwhile, the artist uses 21 Taishan stones wrapped in fiber materials such as wool and silk to elaborate the cloud images and to present the real-life environment of his hometown. The ice-cold rock is embraced by warm fiber. After being rubbed and entwined, the original turquoise of the stone fades into charcoal grey, indicating the vicissitudes of the land.
