Claudia Losi was born in 1971 in Piacenza, a northern city of Italy. She is now living and working in Modena, Turin, Italy. Losi has launched quite a lot projects all over the world because she is attentive to the relationship between human and nature. She loves natural science and human history. Regardless of her use of soft materials, many art critics still regard her works as a sort of “ecological art”.
The theme of this lecture, “Act of Love”, is taken from a series of Losi’s works. Her sculptures made of soft materials represent real and virtual forms of symbiotic relationship that we can find in nature today – the intimate relationship among different species. On the basis of Baroque portraits in the Middle Ages, folktales and fantasies, she spins works which look like a fictional animal fable and like a composite image of specimens as well.
Claudia Losi’s own words on her works
I take the relationship between human and their surrounding environment as my gist and accumulate knowledge through tours and explorations. It is a policy of first importance in my research to learn about deep local knowledge via walk and experience. I focus on numerous fields from natural science (e.g. science, Renzhong Acupoint and geography) to literary geography, poetry and so on.
