Guest Introduction

Considered to be the mother of yarn bombing, Magda's 10 year body of work includes the widelyrecognized knitted/crocheted covered bus in Mexico City as well as her first solo exhibit in Rome at La Museo des Esposizione . At the beginning, the single mother decided to make a simple maintenance of her small apartment in Broolyn. She decided to use a small change to transform the first sight of her home every day.She used crochet hooks, woven a purpledoor handles.Amazing things happened in the community, families changed their doors with wool and crochet.hat is no longer used boxes, trunks, trash, all wrapped into color. Those forms, color and knitting materials can be realized, to some extent, is
simple, popular, and visually attractive. But when they have a relationship with space and concrete, humor and surprise will continue to emerging. She continues to expand her boundaries by joining integrated media company "My passion is with the material: I love displacing hand made, mostly knitted, material in environments where it seemingly doesn’t belong… only to discover that they can coexist quite harmoniously. I understand the limitations of this medium intimately, and I continue to challenge it. There is a transformation that occurs when I cover an inanimate object with soft hand made material. This interaction changes the object without taking away its identity or paralyzing its original function. It is this unplanned arrangement of the material that makes these objects come to life, become sculptural and even redefine or reinterpret a space. The exploration of environmental change drives me: provoking the world to be a more hallenging, unconventional, and interesting place."

Narrated by Tilda Swinton, this film was made in conjunction with the exhibition Diaghilev and the Ballets Russes, 1909–1929: When Art Danced with Music. The impresario Serge Diaghilev was the creator and driving force of the Ballets Russes. He persuaded, cajoled, and charmed the greatest talents of the early twentieth century to join his company. Artists (Pablo Picasso and Henri Matisse),composers (Igor Stravinsky and Erik Satie), choreographers (Michel Fokine and George Balanchine), and dancers (Vaslav Nijinsky and Anna Pavlova) all collaborated to realize Diaghilev’s dream of a seamless fusion of the arts. The spectacular productions of the Ballets Russes dazzled audiences and revolutionized modern dance. This documentary includes footage of revivals of Ballets Russes performances by the Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo, the Paris Opera Ballet, the Joffrey Ballet, and the
New York City Ballet. Also featured are sets and costumes from Diaghilev’s innovative productions,as well as interviews with dancers, musicians, and scholars.

Guest Introduction

Gu Jia ni
Growing up in Southern China, Gu Jiani was professionally trained in ballet and Chinese
classical dance. Dissatisfied with the monotony of conventional training, she embarked on
a path of meditative self-discovery which led to a unique fusion of balletic cleanliness and the subtledelicacy of Chinese classical dance, whichhas become a hallmark of her style. She is particularly interested in theinteraction between internal psychological space and external environmental spaces. This led her to set up “N Space Body Project” which creates residencies to place the “soft” body in different “hard” constructed spaces. These investigatehow the presence of the body and the space in which it is situated affect each other, and how the distribution of bodily energy in different spaces impacts the audience’s visual and psycho-emotional reactions. She has collaborated with such artists as Germany’s Munchner Kammerspiele on “Totally Happy”; Belgium’s Tino Sehgal in “This Variation”; and US/China’s Hou Ying in “Time,”among others. Gu Jiani is also a painter, and sees that visual medium as symbiotic in designing the special relations of her ography.
Cross-disciplinary projects include:choreographer for Camerich furniture brand’s ommercial which won the 2014 British "Best Commercial Short Film Award"; choreographer and movement coach on Chinese opera musical “Zuo Ye Bing He”; choreographer for Chinese independent musician Ding Ke’s music video "Lucile"; long-term collaborator and choreography teacher for Chinese pop singer Tan Weiwei.
